What war is engaging us right now? Pat Buchanan thinks it is the war on Christian values, and Vladimir Putin is representing the cause better than the West. The issues, what ever you think of these characters, are worth pondering.
Case in point: Noah. The old story we tell children of the massive flood that wiped out civilization has been turned into a movie. The environmentalist movement (the religion of the new left) manages to make it the story of saving the earth. What the Old Testament (Jewish Bible) did was take Gilgamesh’s earlier flood saga (an argument among the gods) to serve its purposes – the cleansing of mankind for its sins. Actually, the film Noah is fundamentally atheist and anti-Christian, and should be viewed as such. Maybe the Bible never was meant to be reduced to the realities of cinematography – but that is an argument for another day.
Pat Buchanan is certainly onto something when he quotes Putin’s rhetoric on a return to Christian values. He cites Pope John Paul’s evaluation of the decline of western civilization:
What did Pope John Paul mean by moral crimes? The West’s capitulation to a sexual revolution of easy divorce, rampant promiscuity, pornography, homosexuality, feminism, abortion, same-sex marriage, euthanasia, assisted suicide — the displacement of Christian values by Hollywood values.
Putin has been talking this talk, and for this we might thank him. But the Russian dictator’s war-like tactics and human rights abuses are clearly more representative of the anti-Christ: beware the tyrant who is intelligent enough to use Christian vocabulary to support his agenda. Pat Buchanan should know better.
